Meet the Locals

With such a wide variety of marine life at our reef sites, we thought it would be good to introduce you to some of the locals. These are the spectacular species of marine life you can find in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

Coral Spawning 2021

The Great Barrier Reef is home to hundreds of different types of coral, and other marine life. Every year, often after a full moon, a mass coral spawning will take place. In 2021, our Marine Biologists formed two teams and headed to Saxon Reef and Moore Reef off the coast of Cairns, in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

Our goal was to observe which corals and colonies were spawning over these two reefs. Coral Spawning is a annual event, during which coral polyps simultaneously release millions of egg and sperm bundles into the water.

International Women and Girls in Science Day

This Women and Girls in Science Day GBR Biology is proud to have 9 female Marine Biologists as vital members of our team, making up for 82% of the GBR Biology team. This is an astonishing achievement for our team as generally only 33% of researchers are women. We are proud to be supporting and promoting women in STEM and through our day to day work and educational experiences highlight pathways for young girls thinking of following in our footsteps.
